A Meat Lovers Dream
When you think of Africa common visions include lions, cheetahs and leopards. All of which have more in common than being cats, they are all carnivores. They say “when in Rome, do as the Romans”, well now you can do as the African carnivores by visiting the Carnivore Restaurant.
There are two Carnivore restaurants in Africa, one located in Nairobi, Kenya and another in Johannesburg, South Africa. The restaurants are what they advertise, meat! There are vegetarian options available, but this restaurant is for those that want to eat like the king of the jungles do. As you enter the establishment you will see a large wooden board posting the night’s menu. On one side it will have your standard (familiar) options such as beef, sausage, pork, chicken and ostrich. The other side of the board features the more exotic choices, all of which are native to the African wild. You will be able try game meats like zebra, warthog, impala, kudu, crocodile, and mixed venison.
The food is prepared on large metal skewers over open fires. At the entrance of the restaurant is a large brick, round fire pit where skewers of meet are slowly roasting. When you are seated you will be given a lazy Susan centre piece full of vegetables and sauces for the various meats. On top of your centre piece will be a white flag and as long as that white flag is upright, waiters will continue to bring meat to your table. When you cannot eat another bite, you surrender by lowering your white flag.
The unlimited meat buffet will cost you $20 USD for lunch and $25 USD for dinner. In Kenya the prices runs about $45-50 US Dollars. As for food experience, there is nothing quite like Carnivore. Where else will you be able to tell your friends and family you ate a zebra in Africa? This is the reason that I highly recommend visiting Carnivore if you are going to be in Nairobi or Johannesburg.
